Ion mobility spectrometry allows the detection of volatile organic compounds down to ultra-trace level (ng/L - to pg/L - range). Within the new BreathDiscovery unit the combination of sensitivity using IMS and selectivity using gaschromatographic preseparation was realised successfully. Therefore, on one hand rather complex mixtures of analytes becomes detectable without any preseparation, on the other one humid samples like hunman exhale could be analysed without filter systems or sample preparation steps. Here, a metho was developed to analyse humid human exhale and to apply IMS technology within  medical purpose. The sampling is done by an ultrasound Spirometry systems  SpiroScout® (Ganshorn). The system is characterised by a perfect hygine concept realised to optimise patient and personnell safety and comfort and minial breath resistance.

Typical application fields of the BioScout are within the analysis of metabolites within exhaled air of humans and animals with respect to 

  • Medication control  
  • Detection and continuous control of different kinds of illnes including e.g. COPD, Sepsis or lung cancer.

The results are available within some minutes. The full functionality of BreathDiscovery is realised also by BioScout including possibilities for headspace sampling on cell cultures or bacteria cultures as well as in the field of process waste air.  The direct connection to all parameters of relevance allows comples method development steps specifically for the users needs. 

Technical characteristics:

  • remote control using external computer systems, real time data analysis 
  • heated MCC in the range from 30 to 90 °C isothermal (additional ranges on request), adjustable by graphic user interface
  • sample loop: 10 mL (other volumes on request)
  • Variable back flush of the sample loop to minimise or avoid contaminations 
  • Variation of drift gas and carrier gas flow and back flush flow (sample loop) 
  • Flow-saving-Mode to reduce gas supply and to realise stand by mode
  • Variation of shutter oprening time and periode to enhance dynamic range of IMS
  • simple switch between posivie and negative mode 
  • Software packages including:
    • VisualNow: Software to visualise IMS-Chromatograms, to realised data preparation steps like denoising, smoothing, and wavelet transformation), peak findung and peak characterisation. The software also includes toos for statistical analysis of data sets including rang test, calculation of sensitivity and specificity and to deliver Box-und-Whisker Plots.

Using the availability of measurement results within some minutes IMS-data could be used with respect to process control, remote control and optimisation ins space-time-gain.
